You will find big data in large volumes and you will find them both in structured and unstructured forms. Such data is produced at great speed and the factors that affect then are variety, volume and velocity.
These three factors or features are described as below:
- Variety
It is one of the important characteristics of big data and it is connected to the diversity in the formats and also points to the data which has no structure. The lack of structure in case of big data is linked to its variety and this includes a number of different documents, comments on social networks or micro-blogging platforms, blog posts and other are included. Big data gets data from different resources and a part of it gets generated automatically by machines like data from access logs or from sensors.
- Volume
Whether the data is generated by the people or by the machines quantity of data is equivalent to volume. It is not possible for the traditional database tools to take care of big values like changes in the financial market or bank transactions. The volume of the data generated will be in terabytes or petabytes.
- Velocity
The speed at which new data is made available is termed as velocity. It is the third important feature of big data and based on this feature big data needs to have tools which can help to store data properly. There are some technologies which are capable of managing high speed data after collecting from different data sources.
